Fundamentals of Genomics
Course Code | GENO-101 |
Course Name | Fundamentals of Genomics |
Category | Engineering Technology & Applied Science |
Description | Genomics is an exciting and a relatively new discipline that applies Next Generation Sequencing (NGS) and Bioinformatics to sequence, assemble and annotate the structure and function of Genomes. Advances in Genomics have unleashed a veritable revolution in discovery-based biomedical research. This course is a thorough review of the fundamentals in Genomics that prepares students to acquire an in-depth understanding of the structure and function of Viral, Bacterial, and Eukaryotic genomes; The Human Genome Project (HGP) as well as the organization of the Eukaryotic chromosome. The course covers various aspects of Functional Genomics, Next Generation DNA Sequencing strategies for whole Genomes and Microbial Informatics that cover Molecular Epidemiology and Metagenomics. The course includes a primer into Bioinformatics techniques, platforms and pipelines as it relates to the analysis of Genomes. |
