Description Through a series of lectures and class discussions, Criminal Justice vs. Chemical Dependency explores the relationship between the legal system and offenders involved in drug and/or alcohol related crimes.

Explanations of the judicial system process and how societal values affect the way offenders are treated are offered. There is also an emphasis on dealing with the "negatively" motivated client. Topics covered in this criminal justice and chemical dependency overview include: categories of offenders, introduction to the legal process, sociological considerations, specific drug and alcohol crimes, sentencing, working with the mandated client, victims rights and the war on drugs.

Your grade is determined by a term paper, a term paper presentation, a reflection on films that highlights criminal justice and social issues, a newspaper scrapbook/journal, attendance and participation, and a final exam.

This course, which has been approved for study credit by the Canadian Addiction Counsellors Certification Federation (CACCF) will give you the know-how to:

• Explain the legal process from the point of arrest to conclusion of charges, including sentencing definitions;
• Identify the role drugs and/or alcohol play in the commitment of crime;
• Identify the challenges facing social service agencies dealing with mandated clients and the legal system;
• Be aware of your legal, oral and ethical responsibilities as a counsellor.

Notes Blended Course: a course that blends online/e-learning and classroom delivery. Substantial parts of the content is delivered online, reducing / replacing the amount of face-to-face time. Discussions, team projects, and activities are used for learning.

Each class has 4 face to face classes (12 hours) and online/e-learning classes (30 hours)
